Enhancement of Skills

Generalities
No matter what pedagogical methods are used, many
faculty goals for student learning can be characterized in terms
of skill acquisition. In particular, those faculty who try new
methods want to be assured that students acquire at least the
same level of lab and problem-solving skills as they would under
a more traditional approach. However, many of the innovative methods
being developed have additional goals, such as students' ability
to:
- both design and execute experiments;
- integrate concepts from lab and lecture;
- utilize more complex problem-solving strategies;
and
- critically analyze their own work and thinking
processes.
- Such goals often require specialized assessment
tools.
- The process oriented
tools below were designed to query students about their perceptions
of the relationship between course processes and components and
their learning outcomes.
- The content oriented
tools below were designed to assess the degree of success that
students had in mastering particular concepts and abilities.
